On September 30, the Lekki Free Zone Development Company hosted a colourful flag-raising ceremony to commemorate two important national milestones: the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 65th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.

The ceremony was held ahead of October 1, a significant date shared by both countries. China celebrates its National Day on October 1, marking the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, while Nigeria commemorates its Independence Day on the same date, celebrating its independence in 1960.

The event brought together representatives of enterprises, government agencies and other stakeholders operating within the Zone. As the national anthems were played, the flags of China and Nigeria were raised in a symbolic celebration of friendship, partnership and shared progress.

As a Sino-Nigerian joint venture, the Lekki Free Zone has made the joint flag-raising ceremony an annual tradition. More than a formal commemoration, the event reflects the strong relationship between China and Nigeria and the collective commitment of all stakeholders to building a prosperous future together.

China–Nigeria relations have gained significant momentum in recent years. In 2024, the two countries elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, opening a new chapter in bilateral cooperation. Nigeria’s subsequent admission as a BRICS partner country further expanded its opportunities for international engagement, investment and economic collaboration.

Trade and investment ties between China and Nigeria have also continued to grow. China remains one of Nigeria’s leading trading partners and an important source of foreign investment. This expanding cooperation has provided strong support for the development of the Lekki Free Zone and reinforced its role as a strategic platform connecting Chinese enterprises with opportunities across Nigeria and the wider African market.

Over the years, the Lekki Free Zone has developed a strong foundation for industrial growth. The Zone now offers comprehensive access to water, electricity, gas, roads, telecommunications and port facilities, supported by fully prepared land for development.

Enterprises operating within the Zone benefit from reliable, round-the-clock water, electricity and gas supplies, an extensive paved road network and comprehensive telecommunications coverage. The Zone is also located just three kilometres from Lekki Port, providing businesses with efficient access to regional and global markets.

During the ceremony, the management of the Lekki Free Zone Development Company expressed its appreciation to employees for their dedication and contribution to the Zone’s progress. Management also acknowledged the long-standing support of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and other government agencies operating within the Zone.

Special appreciation was extended to enterprises in the Zone for their continued trust, cooperation and commitment. Management emphasised that the Lekki Free Zone is more than an investment destination; it is a growing community built on partnership, mutual support and shared success.

The Lekki Free Zone warmly welcomes more Chinese and international enterprises to establish operations within the Zone and take advantage of the opportunities presented by Nigeria’s expanding economy and Africa’s growing markets.
